This year marks the 100th anniversary of one of the most infamous ships in history. In his momentous book, Titanic Lives, the historian and biographer Richard Davenport-Hines brings to life in fascinating detail the stories of the men who built and owned the ship, the crew who serviced her and the passengers who sailed in her, and talks about how this superb ship was in many ways a microcosm of Edwardian life and re-creates the tensions of life 100 years ago.

Wine Dinner: Kumeu River Vineyard, New Zealand
A welcome return of this hugely popular wine region dinner. Founded in 1944, Kumeu River is now widely recognised as one of the world’s leading producers of quality white wines. No Kumeu Chardonnay has ever scored less than 90/100 in the Wine Spectator reviews, a status no other New  World producer could match. Their international reputation was further secured by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awarding the 2006 vintage 95 points, and the likes of Jancis Robinson and Tim Atkin have heaped praise. Sample the iconic Chardonnays, and outstanding Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir with Paul Brajkovich, son of the founder, will be with us to tutor what promises to be a wonderful evening.

In a fast paced world, Tristan Gooley is a breath of fresh air. A writer and navigator, he has lead expeditions in five continents, climbed mountains all over the world, sailed oceans and piloted small aircraft. He is the only living person to have both flown solo and sailed single-handed across the Atlantic, and helped the lost Alison Steadman, Sue Perkins and Stephen Mangan in BBC2’s All Roads Lead to Nowhere. A fascinating speaker, he’ll be showing you how to read the landscape and discover a world through different eyes.

Creative Writing Workshop with Mavis Cheek

We launch the first of our new workshop series with a day for anyone with a novel in the drawer or even in their head. Mavis Cheek is a highly-acclaimed author of 15 novels, including the award winning Pause Between Acts, Mrs Fytton’s Country Life, Janice Gentle Gets Sexy and The Lovers of Pound Hill. She is
highly experienced in running workshops – especially for the Arvon Foundation – and this workshop is designed for those who are at the beginning of fiction writing and need encouragement and guidance about how to carry on - and those who have tried writing novels or short stories and then stalled. The day touches lightly on the ingredients of good fiction with workshops and discussions aims to be both fun and  informative with sessions that get you flexing those writer’s muscles.

To celebrate 30 years of local fund-raising for this excellent charity, come and enjoy a glass of wine in the garden (weather permitting) followed by a two-course summer lunch, then enjoy a talk from Val Bourne. Val, who gardens without chemicals near Cheltenham, is a lecturer and garden writer with columns in The Daily Telegraph, Saga Magazine, The Oxford Times, The Hardy Plant Society Journal. Author of the Ten Minute Gardener Series and Colour in the Garden, she’ll inspire you and answer your garden questions.

A very special day with the acclaimed painter and printmaker David Birch. David is one of the Cotswold’s most respected artists, his work has been collected worldwide and he has exhibited nationally at venues including The Royal Academy of Arts in London, The Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers,
The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and The Royal Watercolour Society. He will give you fresh ideas for your work and help you develop your skills, with the opportunity to paint in the hotel gardens and around the village of Chipping Campden (weather permitting). Designed for intermediate and experienced
painters. Please bring your own equipment.
